The Exposition Internale des Arts Decoratifs et Industriels Modernes-the state sponsored fair held in Paris in 1925, from which the term Art Deco is derived-marked the apogee of the Art Deco style. Art Deco’s popularity continued worldwide into the 1930’s and was applied by artists and designers to the enormous range of decorative arts and architecture created between the First & Second World Wars. The appeal of it’s aesthetic derives from simplified forms, stylized decoration, elegant lines, and use of bold color. In 1928, the American Designers’ Gallery in New York introduced consumers to modern interiors and furnishings by designers including Ilonka Karasz, Joseph Urban and Donald Deskey, a multi-talented & innovative furniture, interior, graphic & industrial designer, is best-known for his 1932 interior for Radio City Music Hall. About 1928 he designed the striking cigarette box on which this pen is based.
